My patriotism does not stand for shot and shell, fire and sword, wounding and killing. I do not believe in the patriotism of materialism—dollars and deaths. I believe in education. I believe in leaving a common-sense legacy—truth. I believe in wiping out all the superstitions, if possible. I believe in doing away with bad health, and that means doing away with hysteria, emotionalism and frenzy. The less falsehood, pretense, buncombe and foolish affectation practiced and preached by our teachers the more rational, wholesome and solid our children will grow, and the better the legacy we will leave to posterity. ...Dr Tilden's Wisdom 1910
